FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

What is a LARP?
LARP stands for Live Action Role Play.  Basically, it's a big game of pretend only with rules and goals.  At Otakon, we LARP as different anime characters from different animes.  To get an idea of who you can play we have the list of already created characters here.

Where does this take place?
Otakon takes place in Baltimore, Maryland every year.  For more information on Otakon go to their website http://www.otakon.com.

What is Otakon?
Otakon is an anime convention.  For more information go to their website at http://www.otakon.com.

Where do I sign-up for the LARP?
There will be a sign up at Otakon but there is also a pre-registration online.  During certain intervals you can ask to play a character and they will let you know if that character has been taken.  For more rules and timelines for pre-reg keep checking back here and you can also go to our Yahoo! group here.

What if the character I want to play isn't on the list?
If your character isn't on the list you can still attempt to pre-reg that charcter, but make sure you have a backup character, just in case.  At con registration is generally limited to the list.

Can I play a character from a manga?
In most cases, no.  All of our characters are from the shows to avoid as much confusion as possible.

Do I have to play all weekend?
No.  The LARP is just one of the many things to do at Otakon.  While we hope you will enjoy playing, we know that there will be many, many other things that you wish to do.

How do I play?
At Otakon there will be a LARP meeting where the rules will be explained in full.

Does it cost anything?
As long as you're at Otakon and you get a character you're in!

When do I get my character sheet?
You get your character sheet at Otakon on Friday (or whenever you get there if you have pre-registered, or during at-con-registration on Friday and Saturday).  Times will be announced and listed on the Schedule of Events page each year.

Can I make up my own character or do I have to be one that is given to me?
During pre-registration you pick the three top characters you want to play.  If the character isn't on the pre-made list the GMs will look over the actual character and approve or disapprove it.  At con registration is limited to the pre-made list (but don't worry, there are PLENTY of characters to choose from).  After the LARP meeting you will be given a character sheet with your character's abilities, stats, and the like.

Why are there two different colors for the updates?
Well, that's because two different people update the site!  The majority of the time it's Lori, who updates in this color.  Then there's Dara, who updates in this color.  Then we don't have to type our name all the time and you know who to blame for all the mistakes and typos!

If your questions are not answered here you can ask them on the Otakon mailing list at Yahoo! groups here or you can e-mail us by clicking here.
